This calculator descends from the TI-81, which entered the market in 1990. The first TI-84 entered the market in 2004. These calculators are by now dirt cheap to make and the R&D costs have long since been recovered. They should be checkout lane impulse buys by now. - But they're the calculators all the schools use because they're the calculators in all the math textbooks.
